As we continue to expand offerings all over Gwinnett County with our new partnership, I want to help anyone anywhere dream, plan and implement an adaptive program the like of which exists here in GA.

From Tina -
"The water has always been a fascination and love of mine. My first steps were actually not on land but kicks in the pool. I have been blessed with many adventures and worked hard for many accomplishments. Higher education, athletic achievements, and career goals were my endeavors into the world of success, until I met the love of my life…God.
Since developing a personal relationship with Him, I have leaned that my faith, my family and my purpose, are far more valuable and rewarding in this life than that of my personal achievements.
My passion to teach water safety and swimming instruction has flourished since becoming a Swim Whisperer with Angel Fish. All of my education and certifications cannot compare to the actual experience of working with the AF methodology and helping both children and adults with special needs reach their full potential in and out of the pool.
We know the science that the water relieves the stress that gravity places on muscles and offers strengthening benefits.
That water play develops motor skills and sensory exploration.
That swimming promotes cardiovascular endurance, and provides proprioceptive, tactile, vestibular, and auditory experiences…
But the psychological perspective can never be over looked!
Lessoning anxiety, stress, and building confidence and independence are all life changing outcomes from learning how to swim!
My full intention in becoming an AF instructor was to use my God given passion, gift, and talents to be a blessing to those in the program.
However, I have been overwhelmed by the incredible impact our children, adults, and families have impressed upon me. I have learned what real perseverance means from our athletes. What true acceptance and love of others really looks like, and what gratification really feels like when you’re having fun and doing what you love!

I have fallen in love with adaptive aquatics because it strives to adapt and accommodate

Water provides a ton of therapeutic benefits that are used in our favor all while blending cognitive and

"Hey! My name is Katie Ratcliff and I am a sophomore at the University of North Georgia in Dahlonega. My major is Kinesiology with a concentration in health and fitness, and I plan to become a certified athletic trainer in a school. One of my goals is to spread awareness and teach safety to all children and adults of varying ages and disabilities. I have worked for Gwinnett County as a lifeguard, a water safety instructor, and a lifeguard instructor for 4 years now. One of my favorite quotes is by Nido Qubein that’s says,
“Your present circumstances don’t determine where you can go; they merely determine where you start.”
We are lucky to have her.
AFGA welcomes Kathy to our Team Fantastic in 2023.
Kathy is an experienced PTA and has year so of aquatic experience working with individual with challenges as a PTA in Gwinnett.
Kathy is a great addition to Team Fantastic!
To say Judy is dear to me is an understatement. Knowing her and her son Riley has been such a huge part of my life and her involvement in the creation and growth of AFGA has been significant. She is no longer in the area, but I look forward to hanging out with her some day soon - after all, FL isn't that far away!
This one! What can I say about Britt? She was HUGE part of our AFGA program and has moved on to become a NICU/Pediatric RN at Scottish Rite in ATL! Her sweet spirit and ability to connect with our
swimmers was such a gift and she'll make an incredible RN!
Miss you Brittany! So much.
Oh my! Sarah was an incredible part of AFGA! Her experience in water and out PLUS her knowledge of ABA methodologies helped all of us. Sarah is off on her journey to become an ABA Therapist
and is graduating this spring with her masters in ABA.
Christian is a "Baby Whisperer". She is able to connect with our littlest minnows and angelfish in a gentle and thorough manner. Her kids just LOVE her. She is also an incredible swimmer and as the daughter of Coach Kai Smith of ATAQ (Advanced Technical Aquatics), she is a master in the more advanced skills required for our swimmers to excell in proficiency and competition!
"I think I'll be teaching adapative aquatics for the rest of my life"
As Christian leaves after this summer to pursue her life's path, she will be sorely missed and ALWAYS a part of our AFGA family!
I knew early on that I wanted Jacob on our team. A part of Gwinnett County as a life guard, WSI instructor and friend, I watched him as he exited HS and entered college on his road to becoming an engineer.
He is an incredible instuctor and has embraced all the extra training we receive in a significant way! His impact on his swimmers is HUGE! He was also one of our coaches for our
Special Olympics GA Swim Clinics
Jacob is sorely missed but will always be a part of AFGA.
Holly joined AFGA's Team Fantastic early on and quickly became one of our Lead Instructors. Her expience in the water was decades deep and she provided an incredible level of adaptive skill to her lessons. A young momma of 4 herself, her compassion and empathy along with her love of her swimmers drove her.
Holly has moved on as a busy homeschool momma of her four, but will always be a part of AFGA's Team Fantastic.
Watching the No Limits TRYathlon from a Gwinnett County life guard stand, Elijah knew quickly that he wanted to join us. he decided early on to pursue joining our Team Fantastic. Elijah is a giften young man, in water and out - with values and focus that propelled him to the forefront of our team! His swimmers love working with him and he has been a very important part of AFGA!
Elijah is now studying to be a SPED Teacher at Vanderbuilt in TN.
